When you are denied boarding due to overbooking, the first thing you should do is not give up your seat voluntarily. Edelweiss will try to convince you to do that by offering travel vouchers, but keep in mind that if you do that, you might lose your right to compensation.

If your flight with Edelweiss is overbooked and you are denied boarding, you are entitled to up to 600 EUR in compensation. The final amount depends on the distance you flew, with international flights entitling you to more compensation.

This depends on what kind of vouchers you receive. If you willingly give up your seat and accept travel vouchers in return, Edelweiss Air might argue your right to receive compensation. If the Edelweiss Air overbooking and denied boarding spoils your travel plans, you can opt for a refund. This is an entirely different matter from compensation, which kicks in if the airline fails to notify you within 14 days of your departure. For example, if the tarmac is fogged up significantly and prevents the plane from taking off, Emirates has little control over the matter. However, if the “bad weather” is snow at a time when the phenomenon is expected, Emirates should already have the tools necessary to keep the tarmac clear. In this case, the excuse of extreme circumstance doesn’t stand, and you can potentially get compensated.
